A Few Alpaca Facts

Alpacas (or 'Pacas, as their owners often call them) are part of the Camelid family, which includes llamas, vicunas, and guanacos. Like camels, they can kneel on all four knees. This is called "Cushing", or to cush. They can also Pronk like an antelope.
They grow very soft fleece, which is sheared annually and made into fine, warm wearing apparel. There are 2 breeds, Huacaya and Suri. Their fleece comes in 22 different colors, including Rose Gray, which is desirable to fiber artists.
Alpacas are ruminants, and chew their cud. Their manure looks remarkably like coffee beans. When alpacas disagree, they will spit at each other, though often a warning snort or two is enough to avoid a full-blown spit fight. And when a male is all hot and bothered by a nearby female, he makes a sound called "orgling", which I will not even attempt to describe.
Alpacas are gentle and friendly, and many people fall in love with them. They don't actually sing, of course, but their sound is called a "hum". It is something like a goat's bleat, but smoother and much more pleasant.
